The last Beating of the Parish Bounds took place in May 2002. The custom of ‘Beating the Bounds’ was once found in almost every English parish. In an age when few could read, and before accurate maps were available, the annual ceremony was the most effective way to maintain awareness of the limits of the parish and pass on this knowledge to succeeding generations. Come and join us in Charter Year as we again undertake the ‘Beating of the Bounds’ of the parish over the first weekend in May. We will probably not use young boys to bump the boundary stones on this occasion. Commencing at Haldon on the outskirts of Exeter entrants proceed along the side of the River Exe through rolling countrytside to Starcross, Dawlish, Teignmouth, Torbay, Totnes, Buckfastleigh (with a short stop at Buckfast Railway Station, the "Primrose Line" the charming old town of Ashburton and onwards to the Rallyfield at Mill Marsh Park at Bovey Tracey. Vehicles assembling here, weather and ground conditions prmitting, from mid-day on, drivers and passengers then go on to enjoy hunting through the various auto-jumble stands, admiring some 300 assembled vehicles from Motor Cycles, Vintage Cars (pre 1930) Post Vintage (pre-war), Classic Cars up to the early 1970`s, Vans, Lorrys, Fire Engines, Busses, Coaches, Heavy Commercials, Military/Emergency vehicles.
