						<title>750th Charter Celebrations</title>
<description>This year we are celebrating the 750
years since the Charter, for holding Fayres and Markets, was granted to
the ‘manor of Bovey'.

The following is an extract from the souvenir booklet produced for the 700th anniversary of the Charter in 1960:

On the 18th July, 1260, the earls of Warwick and Norfolk, and other nobles, signed a parchment document on behalf of King Henry III granting to Henry de Tracy the right to hold
a Fayre and market at ‘his manor of Bovey on the Vigil, Feast and Morrow of the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr.’………. The annual Fayre granted by the Charter had
much in common with the country fayres of our day………. Men ‘drank such headie ale called huffe cap, the mad dog, angel’s food dragon’s milk and go-by-the-wall that many
became as red as cocks, and little wiser than their combs.’

There are a number of events planned to mark the 750th Celbrations throughout 2010. The main events orgainsed to date, are listed below. Other events are being considered for Charter Week from 3rd to 11th July.

						<title>Fairtrade Fortnight Celebrations 2010</title>
						<description>FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT 2010

22nd February to 7th March

There are a number of events taking place in our Parish to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight this year. On Wednesday 3rd March, there will be a second Fairtrade Schools Conference in the Town Hall and local primary schools in the area have been invited to send representatives. There will be quizzes and games as well as the chance to hear from a cocoa producer from Ghana in Africa called Nicholas Agyei-Gyan. The aim of the conference is for children to take back information on Fairtrade to their schools and continue work towards their Fairtrade schools award and of course, have some fun!

Bovey Tracey Town Hall will again provide the venue for a celebration of Fairtrade Fortnight on Wednesday 24th February from 6.00pm to 7.00pm. The Bovey Tracey Fairtrade Town Steering Group is hosting the event and Nicholas Agyei-Gyan, a cocoa producer from Ghana will be with us to talk about what Fairtrade means to him, his family and locality. During the evening we will also celebrate Bovey Tracey being recently reaccredited with Fairtrade Town status and encourage those who have not got involved with Fairtrade to consider doing so and meet some of those who are already supporting it. You are invited to come along to the Town Hall to hear Nicholas’s talk.

This year’s Fairtrade theme is the ‘Big Swap’. The idea is to get 1,000,001 people committing to swapping their normal purchases for a Fairtrade one. We are encouraging local residents to join the ‘Big Swap’, where they’ll swap their usual stuff for Fairtrade stuff; their usual lemons, t-shirts, or roses for Fairtrade lemons, t-shirts or roses. There will be a big focus on tea, encouraging people to swap their cuppa for a Fairtrade cuppa tea. 20 million people around the world depend on tea production and they are often some of the poorest. In Britain we drink about 165 million cups of tea a day and only 10% of that is Fairtrade.

Since Bovey became a Fairtrade Town the Traidcraft Stall continues to be available at the Bovey Tracey’s Produce Market in Union Square once a month, to promote Fairtrade in the locality and encourage people to swap to Fairtrade products. This is proving to be very popular with visitors to the market. It seems appropriate to support our local farmers, whilst at the same time supporting those in developing countries too.

For further information contact Liz Westwood 01626 836107.
