A new and exciting opportunity for two roles has arisen at Bovey Tracey Town Council.

Bovey Tracey Town Council plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for residents by providing and maintaining local services and amenities. We manage community assets such as parks, cemeteries, allotments, and public spaces, and play a key role in planning, local events, and community engagement.

As the Council looks ahead, we are seeking committed and adaptable individuals to join our small, dedicated team.

Our office is in Bovey Tracey, Devon and the role is predominantly office based. Applications from people wishing to request a flexible working pattern, including part-time hours, are welcome.

Positions available:

Deputy Town Clerk

  • Permanent, with a 6 month probationary period.
  • Office based – Riverside Community Centre, Bovey Tracey.
  • Hours –up to 37 hours per week with regular evening work and occasional weekends.
  • Salary Scale: National Joint Council SCP 14 – 18 (£29,540 – £31,537 per annum FTE)

Finance Officer

  • Permanent with 6 months probationary period
  • Office based -Riverside Community Centre, Bovey Tracey
  • Hours –up to 25 hours per week, with regular evening work and occasional weekends
  • Salary Scale: National Joint Council SCP 14 – 18 (£29,540 – £31,537 per annum FTE - £19, 959 – £21,330 per annum pro rata)

Current Vacancy: Deputy Town Clerk

Position Overview:

This job is for you if you love variety, are flexible and up for some challenges. You will be supporting the Town Clerk in the day-to-day management and operation of Council services and resources, ensuring compliance with legislation and statutory obligations.

You will also lead on communications and community engagement overseeing public enquiries and maintaining excellent customer care.

You will manage the Councils administrative services and oversee some of the key services.

Previous experience in Local Government is not essential, however experience in administrative roles, managing meetings and managing projects or community initiatives would be beneficial.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deputise for the Town Clerk, including statutory and delegated functions and attending Full Council and Committee meetings.
  • Oversee public enquiries in relation to Council services.
  • Provide advice and support to elected Members and Committees.
  • Serve as Clerk to a key Council Committee: prepare agendas, supporting papers, and minutes.
  • Lead and support Council projects and initiatives.
  • Monitor Council policies and procedures for compliance and legislative changes.
  • Maintain office records in line with GDPR and update the Council website and social media.
  • Support procurement processes and ensure compliance with public sector regulations.

About You:

  • Strong organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Experience in administration and project management.

  • Ideally CiLCA qualified or willing to work towards it.

Current Vacancy – Finance Officer

Position Overview:

This role provides the opportunity to play a key role in safeguarding public funds and providing accurate financial advice and reporting to support decision-making.

The Finance Officer will support the Town Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer (RFO) in managing the Town Council’s financial operations, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and best practice.

Previous experience in Local Government is not essential, however experience in a financial setting, managing finances, setting budgets and managing meetings would be beneficial.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Town Clerk/RFO in managing the Council’s financial arrangements.
  • Serve as Clerk to the Finance, Resources and General Purposes Committee: prepare agendas, supporting papers, and minutes.
  • Manage day-to-day financial operations including banking, payments, invoices, refunds, and reconciliations.
  • Ensure compliance with Financial Regulations and relevant legislation.
  • Prepare and maintain financial records and statutory returns.
  • Support grant applications, fundraising initiatives, and income generation.
  • Prepare draft budget estimates and financial forecasts.
  • Manage payroll and pension arrangements.
  • Assist with the Annual Return and audit process.
  • Produce and present financial reports for Council and committees.

About You

  • Experience in financial management.

  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Commitment to delivering excellent customer service.
  • Ideally CiLCA or FiLCA qualified or willing to work towards it.
  • Willingness to attend evening meetings.
