At the last Full Council meeting, Bovey Tracey Town Councillors discussed the election for the whole council due to take place in early May next year, and how they could attract people to put their names forward as candidates.

The Council is non-political and is made up of fourteen councillors, twelve standing in Bovey Tracey and two in Heathfield. Local journalist John Balment of the Mid Devon Advertiser said in a recent article that he had attended many council meetings across Teignbridge, and that Bovey Tracey edged it as the best run council in the district, a welcome accolade indeed. Would you like to help the council keep it that way?

The council has important on-going business related to the construction of the new Community building on the site of the Old Thatched Inn in Station Road and is involved in the formulation of a Neighbourhood Development Plan that will have positive implications for the future of the whole parish of Bovey Tracey, including new housing development and regeneration of the high street. Highlights of the year include responsibility for the Spring Green Man Festival, the Bovey Young Citizen of the Year Awards, entry in the Britain in Bloom competition and liaison with community groups on the organisation of the popular events in the town. Wider responsibilities include Mill Marsh Park, the Recreation Ground, the allotments and the cemetery.

Some expected vacancies this time around will give opportunities for younger people and more women to be elected to give a better community balance on the council, and for the election to be contested. If you feel you would like to be one of those people at the heart of making Bovey parish a better place for all, then please consider standing for election. There are less than five months to go before nominations can be submitted, so please give the matter serious consideration over the coming weeks.

To help you decide, Mark Wells, the Town Clerk, and existing councillors will make themselves available to answer your questions in what is involved in being a councillor, and what you would need to consider in order to be nominated for election. Details of the process and what you need to know to help in your decision making will be put up on the Town Council website (www.boveytracey.gov.uk) while the Town Clerk can be contacted for more information by email on info@boveytracy.gov.uk or by phone on 01626 834217.
