COMMUNITY AWARDS 2024

There was a good turn-out at the Annual Town Meeting on 27th March, when this year’s Bovey Tracey Community Awards were presented by the Mayor, Cllr Sheila Brooke.

The four Awards winners were all popular decisions, with 9 years old Bella Stephenson becoming the Young Citizen Award holder for her valued contributions to community activities at PPT (the Parish Church), for the Brownies with fund raising for disaster victims, and for looking out for younger children at Bovey Primary School.

The innovative Repair Café won the Environmental Champion Award for its outstanding voluntary work in restoring broken items and so helping reduce landfill and carbon emissions as part of our Climate Emergency activities.

The Community Champion Award went to Stephen Ley, our recently retired street sweeper for his top-class work and for how he cheered up so many people when out and about on his tasks, a real credit to his employer Teignbridge District Council.

Other presentations went to two volunteers who have been meeting and greeting those taking part in on-line discussions with members of Citizens Advice on Tuesday mornings at the Methodist Hall, to a group from the Youth Café for decorating the community fridge to make it more visible to people, and to a young sister and brother who help with setting out equipment and refreshments for play group sessions for very young children.

Recognition was given to a couple who have set up a Pain Café at the Riverside Community Centre on Friday afternoons to allow people with chronic illness or pain to meet socially in a safe non-judgemental friendly environment, a new asset for the town.

Two of our veteran Lifeguards (still in their late teens!) were recognised in the Young Citizen category for voluntary work at Bovey Swimming Pool over 10 years coaching young and old in first aid and rescue techniques in water, plus were crucial in allowing the Santa Dash to go ahead by providing first aid cover for the event.

Vanessa Steer was appointed as the new Honorary Representative of the Lord of the Manor due to her long-term voluntary service with the Swimming Pool Association, and her additional leading roles with the Tracey Alms Houses committee over 20 years (providing over one million pounds worth of grants to local charities and good causes), and with the Town Trust and Samuel Crockers Trust.
