  • Bike maintenance point available free to cyclists in Bovey Tracey image 1

CYCLISTS passing through Bovey Tracey can make use of a new £1,200 bike repair point donated by members of South Devon Cyclists Touring Club (SDCTC).

The facility includes all the tools needed for running repairs including a stand and high-pressure pump.

It is free to use, available round-the-clock and located next to the existing bike storage units in Station Road car park.

With the town having access to the Wray Valley Trail, Stover Trail and Teign Valley, the point’s location was a no-brainer for SDCTC Promotions Officer Graham Brodie.

He said: ‘There’s 100,000 members of Cycle UK nationally and around 1,000 of those live in our catchment area.

‘Bovey is on a bit of an axis between the coast and the moors and it does get a lot of cyclists, there are also lots of good cafes and the community centre.

‘It’s actually one of the few towns in Teignbridge which is well served for cycling.’

Speaking about the £1,200 maintenance point he said: ‘You can get your bike off its wheels, it’s got a high-pressure pump which will do all tyres and incorporated with it is a little set of tools including Allen keys and pliers so anyone capable of basic repairs can fix their bikes.’

This is the second unit donated by the club, the other being located at Stover County Park as part of the recent regeneration programme.

The costs have been covered by club membership and activities.

‘Locally we organise a lot of events such as the Devon Delight Audax and Dartmoor Devil which starts from Bovey in October,’ said Graham.

‘They don’t have a huge entrance fee but we tend to make a surplus so as a charity we thought let’s put it to public good use.’

The unit has been adopted by Bovey Tracey Town Council who will liaise with the club about maintenance.

Mayor Cllr Sheila Brooke said: ‘It’s great, the more activity we have in Bovey Tracey the better.

‘The support we get from clubs and other users is phenomenal and is what makes Bovey so special

‘We’ve also got the outdoor gym in Mill Marsh Park, the relatively new play park which draws huge numbers of people and we are planning to refurbish the basketball area, so great things.

Also planned is a major refurbishment of the Prince Rupert Way play park in Heathfield, subject to the site being acquired from Teignbridge District Council.
